New Gun Control Legislation Proposed

(article)

It was announced earlier today by Vice President Joe Biden, the attorney general, and the top U.S. firearms official that the Obama administration would begin to take steps towards fighting against gun violence. One such proposal would ban importing military-grade weapons which the United States has sold or donated from being imported back into the country; the only exceptions to this rule would be museums and a "few other entities like the government" (no specific example was given in the article as to what sort of entity this would be).

Another proposal would seal a loophole: felons would no longer be able to attain guns by registering them to a corporation or a trust. Those associated with the corporation (such as trustees and beneficiaries) would be required to undergo a fingerprint-based background check before a corporation can register their guns.

The NRA has already voiced their outrage towards the Obama administration's emphasis on enacting gun control laws, saying that the Obama administration has "completely missed the mark" when it comes to preventing gun violence.

I firmly believe that Congress should pass such legislature as soon as possible. While gun violence is, obviously, not solely due to the availability of guns, restricting the availability would more likely ensure that those who have legal weapons are not mentally unstable, unnecessarily violent, etc. What I believe that the NRA needs to understand is that enacting gun control laws is not a personal attack on their freedom--it's a precaution, one that should be seen as necessary by all, especially after the large rise in gun-related violence within the last few years.
